Provision of the Authority's Services

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service provides the following services:

Prevention – we provide advice, education and community safety initiatives to reduce the incidences of fires, road traffic accidents and other life threatening hazards.

This includes services such as:

Home Fire Risk Checks and Smoke Alarm Fitting

This involves a fully trained Fire Crew visiting your home and giving advice on how to make your home safer and where appropriate fitting free smoke alarms.

Working with Young People

We do a lot of work with young people such as school talks and initiatives designed to give teenagers the chance to work with fire crews, to learn about fire safety and to tackle anti-social behaviour issues. One of these projects, LIFE (Local Intervention Fire Education), offers young people from the ages of 12 to 19 the chance to work with real Firefighters over five days, following a set programme of activities.

NYFRS also supports the Crucial Crew, an interactive, multi- agency event also attended by other partner agencies such as the police and the ambulance service. Crucial Crew aims to raise awareness of safety issues to school children in Year 6 (aged 10 and 11).

Working with Vulnerable Groups

We work with local partners to support vulnerable groups such as elderly or disabled people, through initiatives such as our Home Fire Risk Checks and smoke alarm fitting.

Road Safety

We also play an active role in the 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership, aiming to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Fire Protection – we will enforce fire safety legislation and statutory and non-statutory consultation concerning buildings and workplaces. You can find out more about our regulatory responsibilities by clicking here.

Intervention – we provide an emergency response service to fire and other emergencies, including road traffic collisions, chemical spillages and flooding.
