Fire Survival Guidance
If you can escape from the property Priority Actions - Evacuate Property immediately by safest available means - consider alternate exits, windows, flat roof or balconies.

- Check doors with the back of hand before opening to ensure the fire is not on the other side.
- Do not stop to collect valuables or personal possessions.
- If necessary crawl on the floor where the air is cleaner and visibility is greater.
- Do not waste time attempting to locate pets which will in all probability have already made their escape.
- Carry out your head count once outside the property to ensure all persons accounted for.
- Do not under any circumstances re-enter the property for any reason. The Fire Brigade will effect rescues of any persons trapped upon their imminent arrival. The survival chances of those trapped in the building is greater if persons with knowledge of their location remain outside to immediately inform the Fire fighters upon arrival.
ENSURE THAT ALL PERSONS REMAIN OUTSIDE THE PROPERTY! Escape not possible - DON'T PANIC Priority Actions - You must remain calm.
- If possible ensure all persons are together in the room with the largest opening window ideally at the front of the house.
- Check doors with the back of the hand before opening to ensure the fire is not on the other side.
- Close the door and block the gap at the bottom with bedding to prevent smoke entering the room.
- The door should hold back fire for a minimum of twenty minutes.
- Open the window to allow fresh air to enter and enable you to attract the attention of neighbours.
- If the window will not open, or is double glazed, it may be broken by a firm blow with a sharp object in any corner (covering the jagged glass with a thick towel or bedding).
- Remain together at the window and await arrival of the Brigade which will be within minutes to perform rescue
Should smoke or fire enter the room (First floor only) - Plan order of escape, adult first - then children - then final adult.
- If only one adult in room then children should be lowered from window prior to adult lowering themselves to floor.
