Stack Fire - Sowerby, Thirsk

14th March 2015

Time: 17:14

Location: Sandholmes Lane, Sowerby, Thirsk.

Northallerton and Thirsk crews are currently in attendance at a stack fire containing approx 400 half tonne round bales. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service were alerted at 17:14. On arrival crews requested the assistance of the water bowser from Boroughbridge and the Incident Support Unit from Malton.

We currently have 2 fire engines in attendance using 1 hose reel jet and 1 covering jet. Crews are likely to remain on scene for some considerable time.

15th March update

Pitchforks and farm machinery are being used to turn over the smouldering bales, a small jet is also in use for cooling.

16th March update

Crews have carried out a revisit this morning and have now left the scene.


This incident involved a large number round bales on fire. Fire crews created a fire break between the bales which were on fire and a farm building. They also assisted with the turning over of smouldering bales, and used jets to dampen down.
