Remember, Remember the 5th November!

23rd October 2016

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service wants everyone to remember bonfire night for the right reasons, with everyone having a safe and enjoyable time!

Last year on November 5th we only attended one firework/bonfire related incident* across the whole county and City of York, and we would love to make it none this year.

We want people to enjoy this year’s Bonfire Night celebrations safely, and would urge people to go along to an organised event, where the fireworks are handled by professionals.

You can find details of local organised events on the press release section of our website www.northyorksfire.gov.uk/news-events/pressreleases/fwdis16 or in local newspapers.

If you plan to celebrate with your own firework display/bonfire, following the simple tips below should help ensure your evening is a success;

  • Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time.
  • Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary.
  • Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back.
  • Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.
  • Never return to a firework once it has been lit.
  • Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.
  • Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators.
  • Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire.
  • Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.

Our message is to enjoy the celebrations, but do so carefully and responsibly.

ENDS

*The incident in 2015 involved a defective firework which hadn’t gone off, in Selby. One Officer attended and use a bucket of water on the firework
