Fire Service Warn of Bogus Callers (Harrogate area)

24th February 2009

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) are warning local businesses to be aware of bogus callers who are claiming to be working on behalf of the service selling advertising space in publications.

It has been reported that a man has been telephoning local companies (schools in particular) in the Harrogate area asking for them to advertise in a fire service publication.

Although the caller is reported as ‘very convincing’, NYFRS can confirm that they do no currently operate any system where other agencies call on their behalf.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service gives the following advice:

  • If anyone phones claiming to be working on behalf of NYFRS, call the service on (01609) 780150 to verify their identity.
  • If anyone cold calls in person claiming to work for, or on behalf of, NYFRS selling advertising space check their identification. NYFRS staff carry identification cards and will usually be in uniform with identifiable logos on their clothing. If in doubt, call Trading Standards.

It concerns us that people are using the good name of the Fire and Rescue Service to obtain money in this way. We urge local businesses to be vigilant and always verify that a caller is genuine before agreeing payment.
