Success for Fire House Run Team

28th October 2013

On the 21st September 2013, Team Tarahumara set off on a world record attempt to run to all the 225 fire stations in the five boroughs of New York City, over seven days, running approximately 30 miles a day.

The primary aim of the event was to maintain the memory of the 343 NYFD firefighters who lost their lives during the 911 attacks on the World Trade Centers.

The team also set a goal to raise sponsorship for two charities in the UK; The Fire Fighters Charity and Macmillan Cancer Support, and raise the profile of the Stephen Siller Foundation.

The team successfully completed the challenge, running 366 miles in total, and raising in excess of £8000 to date,  for their chosen charities, with money still coming in.

They also took part in the annual 5km Tunnel To Towers Run; honour of Brooklyn Firefighter Stephen Siller from Squad 1, who returned to duty on 9/11 and headed towards the World Trade Centre when they were attacked. Stephen was prohibited from entering the Brooklyn Tunnel in his truck so he raced on foot towards the site with 60lbs of gear strapped to his back. He was last seen on West and Liberty Street where he, more than likely, went looking for his squad, all of whom perished. The Tunnel To Towers Run retraces Stephens’s footsteps on that fateful day.

As a mark of respect a poppy wreath was laid at Ground Zero by the team, on behalf of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, to signify the closure of the challenge. This was a very special moment for them and one which they will remember for a very long time.

You can still donate to the team by visiting their fundraising page;
