NYFRS issues warning over magnifying mirrors

13th May 2009

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are warning people about the dangers of magnifying mirrors, following a call from a concerned lady in the Harrogate area. In this instance the magnifying mirror had been placed near a window and had directed sunlight on to the PVC frame of the window which had started to melt.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service would advise people to keep mirrors of this nature out of direct sunlight and away from windows.

Watch Manager Fire Safety for Harrogate Simon Meynell says: “Although occurrences of this type of incident are quite rare, there is a small chance that these types of mirrors could cause a fire. I would therefore, urge people to place the mirrors out of direct sunlight to minimise the risk. ”

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue offer a free Home Fire Risk Check to all households in North Yorkshire.
