Take Extra Care- Heavy Rain Forecast

18th July 2014

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind the public to take extra care during the periods of FBU strikes that are taking place over the weekend, particularly as heavy rainfall is expected throughout the county.

The strike action is taking place:

  • Saturday 19 July: 11am–1pm and 11pm–1am on Sunday 20 July
  • Sunday 20 July: 5pm–7pm

Often when there are periods of flash flooding we are called to people stranded in vehicles in flood water.

As during the strike periods we will have fewer resources available, we ask that people do not drive through flood water unless they know it is shallow enough to do so. Just two feet of standing water can float a car.

Our other tips for motorists are:

  • Don’t drive down closed roads; they will be closed for a reason.
  • When driving through flood water lower your speed right down and choose the shallowest route available, use the middle of the road if that’s where the shallowest part is and you can.
  • Use a low gear to keep revs high and control speed by slipping the clutch (be aware that water could enter the exhaust, so keep the revs up).
  • Park on higher ground if you live in an area under flood warning
  • Listen to weather reports and flood alerts, and try to avoid areas that are liable to flooding.

If your property is at risk of flooding, you should follow these tips from the Environment Agency:

  • Switch off your electricity / gas supplies.
  • If you have a flood plan, put it into action.
  • Move important items to safety
  • Tune into your local radio station on a battery or wind-up radio.

The fire service is not responsible for providing sandbags, so if you require sandbags you should contact your local council.
