Two large moor fires burn

2nd June 2010

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending two large fires on the North York Moors.

We received notification of the first fire at Eller Beck Bridge, Goathland (close to A169) at 1245hrs. Currently 9 fire appliances are at the scene with firefighters working to bring the blaze under control.

Details of the second incident at Spires House Campsite in the Cropton area (near Pickering) were received at 1354hrs and 10 fire appliances are fighting a 1 square mile fire front, and working to protect the nearby campsite.

Specialist 4 x 4 vehicles and all terrain vehicles have been mobilised from across the county and fire fighters are using beaters and water jets to fight the fires but this is arduous in the rough terrain and current hot weather.
Whilst the cause of the blazes is still to be identified NYFRS is asking all visitors to the moors to refrain from lighting barbeques in the current hot dry spell and to ensure all rubbish is taken home, especially glass bottles.
