Award for the UK Fire and Rescue Service for work with Children & Young People

4th July 2014

The UK Fire and Rescue Service nationally has won a Big Society Award for work with Children and Young People, which you can find out more about here: http://www.cfoa.org.uk/18072

Locally North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service works with young people in a variety of ways. We visit schools to provide fire safety information, provide road safety advice and demonstrations throughout Key Stages one,two, three and four and participate in crucial crew (a multi-agency event for children aged 10-11).

We offer Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE) schemes for young people (aged between 12-19) with the aims of addressing the consequences of anti-social behaviour, raising self esteem, and improving communication skills and teamwork. The course involves young people learning firefighting, first aid and social skills, over a period of five days through a mixture of practical and classroom sessions.

We also run a Young Firefighter BTEC scheme, which is delivered in two ways;

1. Working with schools, the course is delivered directly into the school as part of the curriculum. The course is delivered over a period of one year, with students attending the local fire station one day each week.

2. The course is also delivered on fire stations, whereby the young people attend the station for one evening a week and produce a portfolio to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. Currently the following fire stations run the scheme: Tadcaster, Selby, Skipton, Knaresborough, Bentham, Colburn, Grassington.

The Service also offer a Fire Setters Network which educates young people who have issues with fire. This scheme is delivered by trained practitioners who work closely with the children and families to reduce risks, and increase knowledge and awareness of the dangers associated with fire.
