Background Information on the trip

Each year, firefighters like Stuart Hopkin & Andy Creasey raise and donate small amounts of money for the Firefighters Charity by organising BBQ's, fetes, cricket matches, etc, but on hearing of the families left behind after their Warwickshire colleagues tragically lost their lives last year, they wanted to raise a substantial amount of funds and awareness for the support that the charity give to firefighters and their families.

Further details of the charity and the event can be found at:

Being massively inspired by Ewan McGregor & Charlie Boorman's TV documentary and books "Long Way Round/Down" Stuart & Andy will be riding their motorcycles around the mainland coast of the UK - A total of approximately 2816 miles, an average of 6hrs a day in the saddle, then taking part in pre arranged Charity Car Washes, every day for 14 days. They will be washing cars until it gets dark or the cars stop coming, then join the crew for their evening meal. Hopefully getting some sleep wherever they can on the Fire Stations, "Bells Permitting" getting up bright and early ready for the next day, to start it all over again, and again, and again.....

The Bikers Details:

Andy & Stuart who are using their long leave holidays, will set off from Scarborough Fire station at 06:00hrs on Tuesday 1st July ride south around the country along the coast roads to thirteen different fire stations, in twelve different counties. Setting off each day around 06:00hrs arriving at each fire station between12:00hrs and 14:00hrs. Taking part in the car washes arranged at each station, joined by the crews from the station. For security reasons the stations will pay the money collected directly into the bank.

The Support Vehicle Details:

Marc Ellis, who has himself been a casualty in a horrific RTC last year & Steven Horrigan from MKM at Malton, will drive a van supplied by Mennell Motors. They will have a few less miles to travel as they will drive direct from station to station transporting all the necessary equipment, tools, spares, supplies, sleeping bags, mats, food, and all the car wash equipment , direct to each venue prior to the motorcycles arrival, to meet the fire crews, set up car wash, and get the kettle on!

Publicity for the event:

Stuart started a feasibility study back in November 2007 after reading an article about the partner and child of one of the Warwickshire Firefighters who lost his life trying to save others.

Stuart went out and bought a second hand BMW 650 Dakar, started work on it, and booked his main summer holidays for the trip. Stuart and Andy have personally given a lot up, spending £5000 on new Aprilia Pegaso Trail 650cc motorcycles and equipment. Putting a lot of hard work into generating as much publicity as possible for this event, to ensure they raise a substantial amount of funds and awareness for the Fire Fighters Charity (formerly the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund). As both Stuart and Andy are Wholetime Crew Managers they have busy workloads and spent many late nights organising the event.

They contacted:

  • Over 20 different newspapers local to the fire stations they are visiting asking them to publicise the event prior to their arrival, and on the day.
  • 15 Radio stations, asking them to publicise their charity car wash events a couple of days prior to their arrival, later to find out that BBC Local radio would follow them around the country to raise their awareness and aid their cause.
  • Articles in National Magazines like "The Burning Issue"
  • With positive response from BBC Look North TV, and ITV, who want to cover their journey
  • Stuart and Andy have had a banner designed to show "Sponsors Logos" that have backed them for their trip, that will be in the backdrop for all photo's, and also show links to this NYFRS site, and "NYFRS sports and social" web site.
  • In traditional "Coast Way Round/Down" style our motorcycle panniers will also show all our sponsors logos on our 2816-mile trip.
  • They have written letters, emails, phone calls to many companies local and national, for support.
  • Sponsors from friends, family, and colleagues.

The Finale:

In true "Long Way Round/Down" style any bikers wanting to join Stuart & Andy on their last leg of the trip can meet up at the A1085, Coast Road, Redcar, Cleveland. On Mon 14th of July at 12:00hrs to accompany them the final 42 miles along the coast to Marine drive, Scarborough.
