Fireworks & Bonfire Safety Tips

It’s that time of year again when people will be buying fireworks for both bonfire night and also for celebrating the Christmas and New Year period. We want everyone to be safe this year so here are some tips to ensure your celebrations go safely.

Firework Safety Tips:

  1. Only buy fireworks from a legitimate retailer
  2. Check the fireworks you buy are suitable for the size of the garden and conform to British Standards (BS 7114)
  3. Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks
  4. Light fireworks at arm’s length with a taper
  5. Stand well back and keep others back
  6. Never go back to a lit firework
  7. Never play with fireworks or put fireworks in your pocket
  8. Always supervise children
  9. Store fireworks in a metal box, kept closed between use
  10. Keep pets indoors
  11. Use tongs or gloves to collect spent fireworks.

Sparkler safety tips:

  1. Sparklers should not be given to children under five
  2. Only light one sparkler at a time
  3. Wear gloves when holding sparklers
  4. Put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water

Bonfire safety tips:

  1. Bonfires should be at least 18 metres (60ft) away from houses, trees, hedges, fences or sheds
  2. Use domestic firelighters
  3. Never use petrol, paraffin or other flammable liquids
  4. Check there’s no animals or children hiding in the bonfire before you light it
  5. Don’t burn dangerous rubbish on the bonfire e.g. paint tins, aerosols
