Elvington Airfield Incident 20th Sept 2006NCIDENT INVOLVING JET POWERED VEHICLE - ELVINGTON AIRFIELD - 20.09.06
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service received a call at 1737 reporting a collision involving a jet powered vehicle at Elvington Airfield, York.
Two Fire Appliances and a Support Officer were mobilised and arrived quickly. On arrival crews found a single jet powered vehicle which had left the runway and had come to rest on the grass siding. One male casualty was out of the vehicle on the Arrival of the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The BBC press office have confirmed that the casualty is the BBC Top Gear Presenter Richard Hammond. The collision occurred during filming for the BBC's Top Gear programme.
Prior to the arrival of the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Event Fire Crews and Paramedics had carried out rescue work to remove Mr Hammond from the vehicle. Paramedics carried out first aid activity before Mr Hammond was airlifted to Hospital via Air Ambulance.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service crews assisted with making the scene safe.
An investigation will be carried out into the cause of the collision. No further information is available at this time.
