National Chip Week 15/02/2006

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Supports National Chip Week

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting National Chip Week which runs 13th-20th February and are urging households to stop using chip pans

Every year in the UK there are around 8,000 chip/fat pan fires which result in 34 deaths and 3000 injuries. Last year in North Yorkshire (Jan-Dec 2005) we attended 37 chip pan fires, 1 of which was fatal and 21 which caused severe injury.
If you do choose to deep fry your chips, make sure you do it safely or better still use oven chips or a thermostat- controlled deep fat fryer.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are keen to provide home fire safety risk assessments. Fire Crews are available to attend households throughout North Yorkshire, carry out a home fire safety check and give advice on limiting hazards in the home. Following these assessments, the Fire Service may be able to help homeowners with the provision of safer cooking methods including thermostatic deep fat fryers.
We would like to offer the following advice to households using chip pans in North Yorkshire;

  • Never fill a chip pan more than a third full of oil.
  • Never leave a chip pan unattended.
  • Don’t use a chip pan if you are been drinking alcohol.
  • If the oil begins to smoke don’t put food in it. Turn off the heat and leave it to cool.
  • Never throw water on a chip pan, it will result in a fireball.
  • And most importantly don’t take risks by tackling the fire. Get out, dial 999 and stay out until the Fire Service arrives.
Fire safety advice is free and available from your local Fire Station. To book a home fire safety risk assessment, or for advice on safer cooking methods, call the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Community Safety hotline on 01609 788545 or visit www.firekills.gov.uk
