NYFRS Awards Ceremony

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Annual Awards Ceremony 2006

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service held their annual Awards Ceremony at their Training Centre in Easingwold on Tuesday 27th June 2006.

The Awards ceremony recognises the good conduct and long service of staff members within North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, alongside commendations for staff and members of our communities.

In total eighteen awards were given out ranging from Long Service Medals and Certificates through to bravery awards.
One person receiving an Award was Mr David Westwood who has on a voluntary basis fitted approximately 600 smoke alarms over a six year period.

Mr Westwood was recruited as a community fire safety advisor in 2000 and was aged seventy one at the time.
During this time he has fitted approx 600 smoke alarms and carried out almost the same number of home fire safety risk visits in the York area.  Mr Westwood has done this work on a voluntary basis and is now retiring aged 76.
His contribution to Community Safety has been recognised, and he was awarded with a Certificate of Merit from the Chief Fire Officer, Nigel Hutchinson.

Mr Hutchinson said “Mr Westwood has made a significant contribution to safeguarding a number of local communities. His flexible approach to providing this service has resulted in enhanced fire safety measures in hundreds of homes.” He continues “In order to recognise Mr Westwood’s good work, I am pleased to present him with a certificate of merit and our best wishes for his retirement.” CFO Hutchinson ends by saying “If anybody is interested in helping their community in this rewarding way, we would love to hear from them. Mr Westwood has been a valuable addition to our team and his retirement offers an opportunity for somebody else to carry on this good work.”
