Rogue Fire Safety Advice Concerns Fire Service
It has come to the attention of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service that a number of independent Fire Safety Companies are giving inappropriate advice regarding the provision of fire fighting equipment, legislative requirements and the carrying out of risk assessments. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to clarify the following concerns that have been raised:
- Businesses being told to scrap ‘Fire Certificates’ A ‘Fire Certificate’ can only be issued or withdrawn by the local Fire Authority
- Currently, not all premises require a ‘Fire Certificate’ (check with your local Fire Station/ Fire Safety Officer if you are not sure)
- Independent fire safety companies informing businesses that they must pay an outside consultant to carry out risk assessments – This is not appropriate for most premises
- If you are told that you need extra fire extinguishers you can contact your local Fire Station / Fire Safety Officer for further advice
- If you are told that you need extra testing (in addition to the annual test) you can contact your local fire station for further advice
Please do not hesitate to contact your local Fire Safety Office if you have any other concerns.
The Fire Service in York and North Yorkshire wish to point out that premises that comply with current legislation and have completed a satisfactory risk assessment should not need to carry out any additional work, other than to ensure they maintain current standards. If you own or run a site or premises and you are unsure about your current Fire Safety standards you should seek advice from the Fire Service before committing to any large scale and costly improvements.
