NYF&RS Supplementary Press Statement to ODPM Fire Safety Announcement

The following statement by NYF&RS is in response to the written statement by the ODPM minister for Fire Safety, Jim Fitzpatrick MP, on 12th January 2006, that the introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 has now been delayed from April 1st to Autumn 2006, at the earliest.

“North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are pleased with the statement made by the ODPM minister for Fire Safety, Jim Fitzpatrick MP, that finally ends speculation regarding the introduction of new fire safety laws in England & Wales.

Although we accept that there will be some disappointment, and challenges to the Fire Service locally, at the announcement of the delay (of the introduction of the legislation), we acknowledge the minister’s comments on the requirement to ensure that all stakeholders affected by the changes in fire safety regulations have every opportunity to fully prepare themselves before the changes take place.

The announcement of the delay also provides North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service with an additional opportunity to ensure that all our own staff are fully prepared to deal the new legislation and to offer the public of York and North Yorkshire the advice they will need in order to comply with the new fire safety regulations.

If people have any concerns over the new regulations, or any other fire safety issues they should contact their local fire safety office for advice. However, all persons with a responsibility for ensuring the safety of the public, or employees from fire are reminded that they should always make every effort to carry out their duties at all times, regardless of whichever legislation is in place.”
