Smoke Detectors Save Colburn Family- 01/02/2006
Smoke Detectors Save Colburn Family On January 31st 2006 at 08:38 North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service received a fire call to a property fire in Colburn. The fire was started by a TV set in a first floor bedroom. Shortly after the fire started, smoke and flames quickly spread to other rooms within the property. A family of two adults and five children were occupying the property at the time. An appliance from Colburn Fire Station was quickly in attendance and the crews prevented fire from spreading to adjoining properties using breathing apparatus and fire fighting jets. Due to the severity of the fire an additional three appliances were called for. In total four fire appliances attended the incident from Colburn, Richmond, Bedale and Leyburn.
The family were given early warning of the fire by a domestic smoke detector. The smoke detector was fitted by fire-fighters from Richmond Fire Station in 2003. The fitting of these detectors is part of a rolling programme to fit smoke alarms in Council Properties.
If the smoke detectors had not been fitted to the property, the community could have been confronted with a devastating fire and tragedy.
There were seven people in the property at the time of the fire (five of them children) and they all escaped unharmed, due to the early warning they got from the smoke detector. Nigel Phillips, Group Manager for Richmondshire District commented” Without the warning given by the smoke detector, the Fire Service could have been confronted by a multiple rescue situation and a rapidly spreading fire. I have no doubt that the presence of a smoke detector in this property has saved the lives of the occupants. All properties should have a minimum of one detector preferably two that are tested weekly”
As illustrated by this incident, Smoke alarms save lives. If you need a smoke detector fitting or would like help or advice on any Fire Safety issue, please contact the Fire safety Hotline number on 01609 788545.
