Fire in Vehicle Workshop 20/09/07

Title:   Fire in Vehicle Workshop – Acetylene Cylinders Involved

Date:   20.09.07

Fire Crews attended a serious fire in a vehicle repair shop, on the Leeming Bar Industrial Estate yesterday evening. The first call was received at 1714 on Thursday evening and two fire appliances from Bedale and Northallerton were mobilised quickly. The workshop was well alight and additional appliances were requested from Leyburn, Masham and Richmond .

Crews fought the fire from inside using hose lines and breathing apparatus, whilst other crews worked outside to stop the fire spreading to an adjoining compartment. The fire was brought under control quickly and fire spread was limited.

During the firefighting operation, two Acetylene cylinders were discovered in the workshop. Both had been involved in the fire. Following operational procedures, crews were withdrawn from the building and a 200m hazard zone established.

Incident Commander, Station Manager Carl Boasman says; “We take incidents involving acetylene very seriously. When involved in fire, these cylinders can be extremely dangerous. Even when the fire is extinguished, acetylene cylinders can remain hazardous for up to 24 hours.” He continues:” Public and Firefighter safety is our priority and it was essential to establish a 200 metre hazard zone around the cylinders. The hazard zone included a number of homes and business units." He concludes:” I would like to thank the public and businesses for their cooperation during the evacuation, ensuring that the incident was dealt with as safely as possible.”

After careful inspection of the cylinders using thermal imaging equipment, the hazard zone was scaled down at midnight, allowing homeowners to return to their homes. Business units resumed normal operation shortly afterwards.

Fire Crews remained on scene overnight, cooling the cylinders as a precaution.
