Success of Smoke Alarm Campaign

Title:   Success of Smoke Alarm Campaign in Knaresborough Area

Date:   21/11/2007

A campaign to raise the public’s awareness of the risk of domestic property fires and fit smoke alarms within the Knaresborough area has had great results.

The campaign was started at the beginning of 2007 after crews at the Harrogate and Knaresborough stations identified a trend of small fires in domestic properties and were concerned that this could lead to a very serious fire and possible tragic consequences.

The campaign was led by watch Manager Simon Wall from Harrogate station. Simon coordinated the delivery of over 2000 leaflets to properties within the Knaresborough area warning of fires and highlighting the opportunity to have a free Home Fire Risk Check that could provide a free 10 year smoke alarm.

The results have been excellent with the 500th smoke alarm being fitted by crews this week.

Group Manager for Harrogate, Nigel Phillips says “We have been astounded that so many properties still require smoke alarms and that  the public are placing themselves at risk from serious injury from fire by not having one. I would like to remind everyone of the importance of having a working smoke alarm and would ask that anyone who wants advice on any fire safety matter contacts their local fire station.”

All crews from Harrogate have been involved in the campaign with excellent support from the personnel based at Knaresborough.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service offers a free Home Fire Risk Check to every home in North Yorkshire . Fire and Rescue staff can visit homes to check for fire hazards. It could save your family’s life. Smoke alarms can be fitted as part of this check, which is free.
