National No Smoking Day

Title:                National No Smoking Day 12th March 2008

Date:                   11th March 2008

Tomorrow is National No Smoking day and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting the day and encouraging people to give up smoking.

Most people know the long term damage smoking can do to their health and why it makes sense to give up.  What a lot of people don’t know is that smoking can kill you very quickly. More fires are caused in which people are killed, as a result of carelessness with smoking materials, than any other single cause.

Each year 1,770 people are either killed or injured by fires caused by smoking at home.  Around a third of these fires occur between 10pm and 3am, when people have gone to bed, or come in from a night out.

If you do smoke:

·         Make sure you have completely extinguished smoking materials before leaving the house or going to bed.

·         Don’t empty ashtrays into bins; place them in a metal container and preferably outside.

·         If you are tired or have consumed alcohol and are alone in a room, don’t smoke.

·         Never smoke in bed.

·         Fit and maintain a smoke alarm - A working smoke alarm can save your life.

For these reasons North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service fully supports No Smoking Day on March 12th 2008.
