Fire Service Warns of Bogus Firefighter (Whitby area)

27th January 2009

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are warning local residents to be aware of a man claiming to be a Firefighter in order to gain access to people’s homes.
It has been reported that a man has contacted a householder in the Whitby area stating that he is a Firefighter, trying to arrange to fit smoke alarms. Homeowners need to be aware that he is operating in the area.

Fire and Rescue Service staff do visit households to make appointments to carry out Home Fire Risk Checks. This will usually be by prior arrangement and all Fire and Rescue Service staff carry identification cards, which homeowners should ask for before letting anybody into their house.

Home Fire Risk Checks are a free service, where Fire and Rescue Service staff visit your home to look for hazards, give fire safety advice and fit smoke alarms where necessary. A visit can be arranged by calling 01609 788545 or by visiting www.northyorksfire.gov.uk
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service gives the following advice to help residents avoid bogus callers:

  • Fire and Rescue Service staff carry identification cards. Make sure you check before letting someone into your home.
  • Fire and Rescue Service staff will usually be in uniform with identifiable logos on their clothing.
  • Homeowners should call 01609 780150 to verify if a caller is genuine. The line is open 24 hours a day.
  • If in doubt, lock them out, and call the Police.

It concerns us that these people are using the good name of the Fire and Rescue Service for this purpose. We urge homeowners to be vigilant and to make sure they know a person’s identity before letting them into their home.
