Information about the Recruitment Process

Below is information about the stages of the recruitment process.

Stage 1 – Online Application

All applications should be made online via our vacancy website Welcome

Applications will be open to those new to the Fire Service, those wishing to transfer from another Service and those currently On-Call. There are no postcode restrictions for applicants.

Please note, if you have previously applied and were unsuccessful you will be required to submit a new application.

Stage 2 – Online Assessments

The next stage of the selection process is to complete two online assessments and three ability tests which will help determine your suitability for the role of a Firefighter. This online assessment process is used to help us manage the high volumes of applications we receive for this role, fairly and efficiently.

Due to the high volume of applicants, the process will be managed online and supported by email only. Unfortunately, feedback will not be available.

Applicants will have 2 weeks to complete all assessments.

Our recruitment pack, contained within the Wholetime Firefighter advert, will provide further details on the online assessment and you can also access some practise tests here Candidate Preparation | Test Partnership

Stage 3 – Practical Assessments

Successful candidates will be invited to complete the physical assessment stage. Please note prior to physical assessments all applicants will be required to complete a physical activity screening questionnaire. If a questionnaire is not submitted by the deadline the applicant will not be able to take part in this stage. More information can be found here: Physical Fitness Selection Tests – North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service

Stage 4 – Strengths based Interview

Those successful at the physical assessment stage will be invited to attend a Strengths based interview and scenario-based presentation. We have worked in partnership with an external Assessment Partner, Cappfinity, to design a robust assessment process.

For more information on how to prepare for a strengths-based assessment please visit Cappfinity Preparation Hub

We’ll be hosting some online workshops prior to the interviews for applicants to learn more about how best to prepare.

Stage 5 – Pre-employment Clearances

Applicants that are successful through all stages will be required to under-go a number of pre-employment clearances. This will include DBS check, medical clearances and references.

Stage 6 – Training Course

Our Wholetime recruits course runs over a 13-week period. This is a residential course at our Training Centre in Easingwold. Those transferring from another service or currently on-call may not be required to attend the training but this will be discussed on an individual basis following a training needs analysis.
