Follow our tips to stay safe this Halloween.

Many Halloween costumes are made from materials that can easily catch fire if they come into contact with a naked flame. Please consider alternatives to real candles this year. Battery-operated candles or glow sticks are great options that keep the spooky atmosphere without the risk. Whatever you choose, always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Top Tips for a Safe Halloween

  • Take extra care when driving there may be more children out and about.
  • Respect others. For some people, Halloween can be distressing. Please respect homes displaying ‘No Trick or Treat’ notices.
  • Check for Safety Alerts. Before using costumes or decorations, check the government’s product safety alerts and recalls: Product Safety Alerts, Reports and Recalls – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
  • Use battery-operated candles in pumpkins and lanterns, they’re much safer than traditional candles.

If you do use real candles:

  • Secure candles in a proper holder and keep them away from flammable materials like curtains.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in a room with lit candles.
  • Extinguish candles when leaving a room and ensure they’re completely out before bed.
  • Avoid burning several candles close together to prevent flaring.
  • Keep all costumes and decorations well away from flames. If clothing catches fire, STOP, DROP AND ROLL.
