An update following the Government’s emergency alert
Following the Government’s emergency alert message, our Control Room is receiving a high number of calls from people concerned about neighbours having barbecues or outdoor fires.
We understand people’s concerns, particularly while conditions remain very dry, but we can only respond where there is an emergency that threatens life or property.
Although we’ve had some rain recently, the ground is still extremely dry. We continue to ask everyone to act responsibly, whether you’re at home or enjoying the countryside.
If you’re having a barbecue at home:
- Keep it well away from trees, fences, sheds and other combustible materials.
- Never leave it unattended.
We would ask that whilst the ground is so dry you avoid having garden bonfires.
If you’re visiting the countryside:
- Take a picnic instead of a disposable or portable barbecue.
- Do not light campfires.
- Take all litter home with you, especially glass bottles and jars.
- Dispose of smoking materials properly.
In an emergency, always call 999.
If you know of acts of deliberate fire-setting in your community you can report them to the Police by calling 999 or 101 or anonymously through Fire-Stoppers on 0800 169 5558, by visiting their website
