Stay safe this summer- summer safety advice

Published 1st May 2025

With the warmer weather returning this week, we’d like to remind you to follow our advice if you’re visiting the countryside. Nationally there’s already been double the amount of wildfires this year compared to the same period in 2022.

Please help to protect our beautiful countryside!

• Stick to designated paths and always leave gates and property as you find them
• Take your litter home, especially glass bottles and jars
• Discard of smoking materials carefully. Never throw cigarette ends on the ground or out of car windows.
• Don’t have campfires or barbecues in the countryside, instead look for safe designated areas. Small fires can quickly spread especially when the ground is dry.
• Park responsibly and make sure a fire engine or ambulance would be able to pass
• If you spot a fire in the countryside always dial 999 and ask for the fire service

Don’t forget the temperature of open water will still be chilly, and cold water shock can affect your ability to swim. Always enter water slowly to acclimatise rather than jumping in.

If you see someone in difficulty call 999 and ask for the fire service inland or the Coastguard at the coast.
