Stay Safe in the Kitchen This Autumn
As the weather turns cooler and we spend more time indoors, many of us find ourselves cooking more meals at home. But with increased kitchen activity comes increased risk and a moment’s distraction is all it takes for a fire to break out.
Most kitchen fires attended by our crews are caused by items being placed too close to the cooker or are cooking related such as cooking being left unattended.
To help keep you and your loved ones safe, we’re sharing some essential fire safety tips:
- Keep hobs clear. Never use the hob as a storage space. Items like tea towels and oven gloves should be kept well away from heat sources.
- Never leave cooking unattended. If you need to step away, turn off the heat until you return.
- Always ensure the cooker and hob are turned off after use. Be mindful of pets who may accidentally turn knobs or switches back on.
- Avoid wearing loose clothing near flames and keep tea towels away, they can catch fire quickly and cause serious injury.
- Fat and grease buildup in ovens, hobs, cooker hoods, and grills can ignite. Keep these areas clean and grease-free.
- Register appliances: Visit https://www.registermyappliance.org.uk to receive updates on faults and recalls.
- Keep your toaster clean and positioned away from curtains and kitchen rolls.
- Avoid cooking when tired. Don’t cook if you’re feeling drowsy or under the influence of alcohol.
- Avoid running appliances overnight or when you’re out.
- Check for faulty wiring or overheating.
- Turn pan handles inward to prevent accidental knocks.
- Never use metal in microwaves.
